Substance use disorder (SUD) is considered a mental disorder or chronic medical condition. It affects a person’s brain and behavior and can lead to an inability for the person to control their use of substances such as illicit drugs, alcohol, or prescription medications. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, with addiction and physical dependency being the most severe form of SUDs.

Previous research has discovered that about 50% of people who have SUD also have a mental disorder and vice versa. Co-occurring disorders can include anxiety disorders, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and schizophrenia, among others.
Treatment for SUD may include behavioral therapies and medications. It will be individualized based on the person’s condition, situation, other disorders and symptoms, the person’s age, the misused substance, and the specific mental disorder(s).
Your healthcare provider will work with you and together you can determine what treatment may be best suited for you.
We offer Medication Assisted Treatment with Suboxone so ask your provider if this is right for you.
If Narcan is needed for you, a loved one, or a friend, it can be provided to you free of charge and anonymously. Be sure to ask your provider if needed.
