5 Steps to a Successful Plan for Quitting Smoking
Any time we make a change, big or small, it is important to have a plan! Becoming a non – smoker is a rewarding moment and when planned out carefully –
Step 1: Chose the day (and the time) – Decide what day is going to be YOUR day! Be selective around what is happening and who is going to be nearby for support will be important. Try to avoid days where there may be temptations!
Step 2: Decide who to share this wonderful news with – who is going to be your biggest cheerleader?? Think of who you spend most of your time with. Is it co-workers, friends, family? Think about everyone around!
Step 3: Decide what you want your team to do to be there for you!! Do you want an ear?? Do you want tough love??? Do you want a drill sergeant?? Do you want a hug??? People want to help, but they also want to know how to help! Be specific!
Step 4: What do I do when I get a craving? Have a list of other things to do! And be willing to go out on a limb and try something that you have never done before!! Having a craving?? Do some deep – breathing, dance around the room, go for a run, call a friend, go wash your hands….move your body, change your thought and keep going to becoming a non – smoker!
Step 5: What if it gets really, really, really hard? There will be times when returning to smoking may feel easier but fighting through those days will truly pay off in the end! Having a few techniques in hand will help get through these tough times. Asking for support, learning a new hobby, focusing on being a healthy non – smoker, using the Maine Quit Link, taking a nap or spending time with family can make these tough times a little easier! There will be hard days and maybe even a slip up or two but be kind to yourself! Look for progress!
